General meaning
Despite its dramatic name, Death is the card of transformation: an ending that clears the ground for a beginning. A chapter — a job, a relationship, a habit, an identity — has run its course, and holding on only prolongs the ache. This card asks for a conscious goodbye: grieve what was, honor what it taught you, and make room. What comes next needs the space that only release can give.
Reversed, the ending is being resisted — clinging to what is already over, or a transition stalled by fear. The old chapter keeps taking up rooms the new one needs. Loosen your grip gradually if you must, but loosen it: stagnation is the only real danger here.
In love
In love, Death can mark the end of a relationship that has truly finished, or the end of an old dynamic within one that continues — the way you relate must transform for the bond to survive. Grief is appropriate; so is hope. What is released makes room for a love that fits who you are becoming.
In career
Career-wise, this card often appears at genuine transitions: leaving a role, closing a business chapter, or watching an industry change. Resist the urge to cling to the familiar title or routine. The ending is also an opening — start sketching what comes next.
